Abstract

Three kinds of cruciferae plants were screened , namely Hoary-cress , Cardaria draba (L) ., London rocket, Sisymburium irio ( L ) and Salad rocket, Eruca sativa ( M) .Each plant leaves was separtely extracted by water (WE) and ethyl alcohol ( 80%) (FE1) .The alcoholic extract was then fractionated with hexane(FE2) and ethyl acetate (FE3). The extracts for each plant revealed antimicrobial activity toward different tested microorganisms. This activity was varied according to the tested microorganisms and type of employed solvent.
The (WE) salad rocket was superior in inhibiting the growth of tested microorganisms which were Bacillus subtilis , Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium , the average of inhibition radius were 15.95, 7.7 and 8.48 mm. respectively . The (WE) of Hoary cress showed inhibition toward Saccharomyces cerevisiae with 4.58 mm inhibition radius . The sensitivity of molds was varied toward the four named extracts above . The (WE) of Hoary cress yielded highest inhibition activity toward Aspergillus niger with 76.84% inhibition rate at 300 μg/ml.
